as new Executive Director

Ann Toback PhotoAnn Toback has been named executive director of The Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring. She began in this position on June 9, 2008.

“We’re excited that Ann has joined Workmen’s Circle as our new executive director,” says Peter Pepper, president of The Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring. “The Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring is on the cusp of a transition with new leadership, and Ann’s strong background as a dynamic leader and in the labor and Jewish communities makes her the perfect choice to lead our organization. Her passion and experience will help us grow our organization, as well as bring on board a new generation of future Workmen’s Circle members and activists.”

Toback will be responsible for all facets of leading the organization, including its strategic agenda, working with its regional districts; schools and camp; community and member outreach, and internal management. In addition, she will play a key role representing The Workmen’s Circle within the Jewish community here and across the globe.

Most recently, Toback was assistant executive director of the Writers Guild of America, East. During her nine-year tenure at the Guild, she was responsible for developing and implementing labor campaigns; negotiating and enforcing collective bargaining agreements including those with the major studios and conglomerates and also separate agreements with CBS and ABC News; overseeing the Guild’s political and lobbying strategies; and spearheading external and internal organizing and mobilization. During the recent 100-day writers strike that ended in February, Toback actively mobilized membership, coordinated New York picketing strategies, and served as Guild representative before legislators and the media.

Prior to joining the Writers Guild of America, East, Toback worked at the Boston law firm of Rosenberg & Schapiro, as well as in the legal publishing industry. She received her B.A. degree from the State University of Buffalo and her J.D. from Boston University School of Law.
