Today’s Workmen’s Circle is a progressive voice in the Jewish community and a Jewish voice in the progressive community. Long an advocate for social justice, equal opportunity, respect for workers, and the rights of immigrants, today we are on the public record and on the picket line to end the war in Iraq, to advocate for a single-payer national healthcare system for all Americans, and to fight for comprehensive immigration reform.

Our resolutions are written through a democratic process that helps to shape our agenda. Our social justice work is guided by a historic commitment to the creation of a shenere un besere velt, a better and more beautiful world. Click here to view all resolutions and position papers.

Here’s some of what we’ve been working on:

The War in Iraq

In 2002, the Workmen’s Circle was the first major American Jewish organization to decry the unjust war in Iraq, and in 2005 we led in calling for an immediate and complete withdrawal of all American troops.  We remain the Jewish face of the anti-war movement.

Healthcare For All

For many years, The Workmen’s Circle has held that the only equitable and cost-efficient approach to healthcare in America is a single, universal, publicly-financed plan with automatic enrollment, like Medicare.  We are building a public conversation through discussion groups and film screenings, and taking our views to Congress through lobbying, letter-writing campaigns, and more. Healthcare should be a civil right for all.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

As an organization founded by immigrants, we understand the vital contribution immigrant communities have always made to America’s culture and economy, and we advocate for comprehensive reforms in our immigration policy to provide a path to legal status (and ultimately citizenship) for those living in America without documentation.  We demand an equitable process for allowing new immigrants into the United States and the extension of full labor rights to all workers regardless of their immigrant status. Civil Rights for All

Throughout its history, the Workmen’s Circle has stood for full legal equality of opportunity for all Americans.  We stand with communities of color, LGBT movements, organized labor, and progressive Jewry in opposing racial profiling, inequality in marriage rights, attacks on women’s reproductive freedom, and the attack on civil liberties pursued in the name of the “War on Terror.”  We envision a land in which all are equal under the law, free to marry whom they love, and enjoying those rights guaranteed by the US Constitution.
