The Sheriff Pledge for Free & Fair Elections is a nationwide initiative of the Talk to Your Sheriff campaign encouraging sheriffs to publicly reaffirm their commitment to the Constitution, the rule of law, and elections authorized by election officials and courts.
This initiative is nonpartisan. It is not about supporting any political party, candidate, or election outcome. Rather, it is about affirming the important role sheriffs play in protecting public safety while respecting the lawful responsibilities of election officials and preserving confidence in our democratic process.
Recent election cycles have seen increased public attention on the role of law enforcement during elections, including discussions around ballot security, election investigations, and the responsibilities of local officials.
While election administration is generally the responsibility of election officials—not law enforcement—public confidence is strengthened when sheriffs clearly communicate their commitment to carrying out their constitutional responsibilities impartially and in accordance with the law.
The Sheriff Pledge provides an opportunity to make that commitment publicly.
