Sunday 10:00 – 11:30 AM:  Feb. 23, Mar. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, Apr. 6, 27, May 4, 11 

Course Goals: The course will discuss various projects aimed at changing the orthography of Yiddish publications and how some of the blueprints were implemented. Special attention will be given to the reforms suggested by Ber Borokhov, Max Weinreich, and Soviet linguists and to attempts to Latinize Yiddish. The course will also analyze approaches to the standardization of the language and the development of Yiddish terminology for new domains of use. The lecturer of this course has studied the subject academically and also remembers (as a onetime editor of Yiddish publications) the “language battles” in the last years of the 20th century.

Additional Info: This course is conducted entirely in Yiddish.
