Intermediate Literature with Leyzer Burko: Isaac Bashevis Singer in Warsaw
Tuesday 12:00 – 1:30 PM: Feb. 25, Mar. 4, 11, 18, 25, Apr. 1, 8, 22, 29, May 6

Course Goals: This course will be based on the short stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer about his childhood in Warsaw before World War I. We will follow young Isaac around the old Jewish neighborhood and meet the colorful characters of Krochmalna Street, where many poor Jews lived and where his father headed a rabbinical court (a bezdn). Isaac will be our guide to Yiddish vocabulary and grammar—and also to the geography of Warsaw. We will compare his descriptions with archival photos, vintage maps, and a virtual tour of Warsaw today.
In class, we will read and analyze modified (simplified) versions of Singer's stories from his memoir
In My Father's Court (In mayn tatns bezdn-shtub). Each class will also include grammar segments, conversation activities, role-plays, and discussions of idioms found in the readings. Class will make use of short recordings of Singer himself as illustrations.

Course Tools: The modified versions of Singer's stories, as well as other materials, will be provided by the instructor.

Additional Info: This course is in Yiddish but with some grammar explanation in English.
