Yiddish Songs of Love, Courtship, Flirtation and Marriage with Cindy Paley (mini-course)
Thursday 4:00 – 5:30 PM:  Feb. 27, Mar. 6, 13, 20, 27

Eastern European Yiddish love songs of a century ago reflected the life of the Jewish Pale of Settlement within the Czarist Empire, as well as the universal struggle of the young with the old. Love songs generally express feelings of sadness and longing, of unrequited love, of parental interference or parting. Later songs reflect more relaxed social conventions when young men could marry girls without family pedigree (yikhes) or dowry (nadn).  Song sheets in transliteration with English translations as well as sheet music will be sent as well as YouTube recordings.
