Activist Spotlight: Nina Feldman
Hello! My name is Nina Feldman, and I’m a summer Social Justice intern through NYU’s Collegiate Leadership Internship Program (CLIP). Originally from Weston, Connecticut, I’m entering my third year at McGill University, where I'm studying Political Science and Jewish Studies. My time at McGill has fueled my passion for politics and law, inspiring me to delve deeper into these fields. Becoming personally acquainted with Irwin Cotler, former Attorney General of Canada, solidified my commitment to human rights advocacy and deepened my understanding of the critical role of the legal system in addressing institutionalized discrimination.
The Workers Circle’s active mission to cultivate a stronger democracy and to fight fascist powers aligns with the form of advocacy I adhere to. I was ten when I attended my first rally, the Women’s March on Washington, and since then, I have been committed to using my voice to fight for gun safety, women’s bodily autonomy, and against antisemitism.
Last summer, I affirmed my interest in the legal component of social justice reform during my time as an American Jewish Committee Goldman Summer Fellow. During my internship, I worked alongside Chief Legal Officer Marc Stern to amend New York State legislation and research similar statutes pertinent to bills and their penalization. My primary focus was compiling groundwork research and advocacy work for Assemblyman Sam Berger’s Dialogue and Decorum Act. The Dialogue and Decorum Act aims to establish the crime of disturbing and or disrupting a lawful assembly as a Class A misdemeanor, with a focused objective of guaranteeing one’s First Amendment right to freedom of speech and assembly, especially that of New York college and university students.
My passion for social justice and career aspirations converge in a steadfast commitment to combating antisemitism through legislative reform. Beyond this, my dedication to social justice encompasses exploring feminist ideology, addressing gender-based violence in developing countries, and utilizing constitutional law to enact meaningful change.
The next few months ahead excite me, and I’m eager and willing to play my part in helping the Workers Circle come one step closer to achieving its goal of building a better and more beautiful world for all.
