Overview of Organization: Celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2025, the Workers Circle is a national, Jewish social justice organization founded by Eastern European immigrants who came to the United States fleeing autocracy and persecution, and seeking democratic freedoms and economic opportunities. Position Overview:
Controller– New York City, Hybrid position
The Controller plays a pivotal role in ensuring the financial health and operational efficiency of our nonprofit organization. This position supervises the bookkeeper and oversees all financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance activities, ensures that the organization adheres to all regulatory requirements.
The Controller will lead the department to foster a culture of accuracy and accountability in financial practices. By analyzing financial data and trends, the Controller will provide strategic insights to support decision-making and drive organizational growth. Ultimately, this role is crucial in maintaining the integrity of our financial systems and supporting the overall mission of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
·Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit accounting, HR experience a plus.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
Responsibilities:
Supervise bookkeeper in all day-to-day accounting functions as well as payroll.
Ensure that financial data and cash flow is steady and support operational requirements.
Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements, to comply with accounting standards.
Manage the budgeting process, including forecasting analysis to support financial planning.
Make certain that we are following all federal, state, and local regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures.
Collaborate with all departments to provide financial insights and budgets that drive strategic initiatives and operational improvements
Lead and manage the annual audit process with external auditors and Audit Committee.
Skills:
The required skills for this role include strong analytical abilities, which are essential for interpreting financial data and making informed decisions. Proficiency in accounting software and financial management tools will be utilized daily to streamline reporting processes and enhance accuracy.
Leadership skills are crucial as the Controller will be responsible for guiding the Bookkeeper, members of management and department heads while fostering collaboration. Excellent communication skills are necessary for effectively conveying financial information to stakeholders and collaborating with other departments. Additionally, strategic thinking will be employed to identify opportunities for financial improvement and support the organization's long-term goals.
