Inside the Rhythm and Melody of Yiddish Song with Josh Waletzky
An exploration of the patterns common to a wide body of Yiddish songs -- similar to the ones found in the Mlotek collections, but including many examples not found in these foundational volumes, and particularly archival recordings and newer songs written after the last volume of the Mlotek series was published. The exploration of rhythm will be based on the zogevdik-zingevdik-tantsevdik scale of rhythmic registers; and we'll go on to explore the figures of melody and the text-tune mutual influences that create the broad aesthetic sensibility common to the bulk of Yiddish song over the past hundred years--the sensibility known to musicologists as "ethno-hearing." We will address the question: what musical features are/were valued (and are therefore commonly found) by the singers and listeners who collectively create(d) the body of Yiddish song we enjoy today?
No musical training or knowledge of Yiddish is required -- we'll learn by careful listening. For listeners, singers, and songwriters!
