Course Goals: We will see materials from his various periods as a modern poet (before, during, and after the Holocaust) and as an essayist and literary critic in the New York Yiddish press: Yidishe Lider (1921), Ven Yash Iz Gekumen (1937), Esterke (1940), Shtra lndike Yidn (1946), Fun Mayn Gantser Mi in Tokh Genumen (4 volumes of criticism and essays)
There will be an emphasis on his experiments as a poet of the Yiddish avant-garde, an innovator of language and thematic, and how the poet integrates in a new way Jewish themes with a modern garb.
Course Tools: Students will have to analyze for themselves a few poems during the semester. In the lecture, these will serve as an introduction to the theme that will be discussed.
