Course Goals: Sholem Aleichem was very fond of this work, where he analyzes, with humor and social criticism, episodes of Jewish life in Europe in the early years of the 20th century. The crisis, the new conflicts, and the drastic changes in Jewish life are reflected in the day-to-day lives of the characters on the path to the modern world.
We will analyze Sholem Aleichem's language, the conflicts between tradition and modernity, social and political conflicts, and social and personal crises in times of revolution and upheaval in Jewish history. We will analyze the 11 chapters of the first part of the novel, and we will see excerpts from the 12 chapters of the second part.
Additional Info: This course is conducted entirely in Yiddish.
