The course will discuss a broad range of topics, including the role and impact of Mendele Moykher-Sforim and Sholem Aleichem, the pre-1917 Kyiv Group of Yiddish Writers (Bergelson, Der Nister, et al.), and the Kultur-Lige in the early post-1917 period. Special attention will be given to the building of a Yiddish cultural center in Kharkiv; the Yiddish educational network in the 1920s and 1930s; the Kyiv Institute of Yiddish Culture; and the lives and works of such writers as Avrom Abchuk, Itsik Kipnis, Rive Balyasne, Chaim Gildin, and Hirsh Bloshteyn. The repressions of the Stalinist period and emigration of Ukraine's Yiddish literati to Israel will be discussed too.
