from $310.00

Sunday, 12:00 – 1:30 PM ET:  Oct. 19, 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, Dec. 7, 14, 21

Course Goals: This course will explore the Yiddish dialects spoken in contemporary Haredi communities (not only Hasidim). We will cover many different varieties: the Williamsburg Hungarian type; the Crown Heights Lubavitcher type; the Lakewood Litvak type; the Jerusalem Litvak and Galitzianer types; the London, Antwerp, and Zurich types. We will explore the origins of the new dialects; how the new grammar is different from the old; how Haredim borrow and Yiddishize foreign words (especially English); how they switch between languages and between dialects; and how men and women talk differently. By the end of this course, students will much better be able to recognize and understand the many different varieties of living Yiddish.

Course Tools: Excerpts and illustrations from a large variety of podcasts, lectures, interviews, and music videos. Hopefully also guest speakers.

Additional Information: This course is taught entirely in Yiddish.
