We will read and discuss Yiddish literary texts (poems, short stories, and passages from plays) featuring different characters from Megiles Ester: Queen Esther, of course, but also Vashti, Mordecai, Ahasuerus, or Haman. How are they represented by Yiddish writers of different eras, both male and female?
Course Goals: Study the influences of a biblical text on modern literature. Improve comprehension skills of written texts, understand the historical context, develop vocabulary, learn how to use different research tools in order to acquire independence in studying Yiddish literature.
Course Tools: Texts provided by the instructor.
Additional Info: This course is taught entirely in Yiddish, however difficult words/expressions/issues may be explained in other languages if necessary.
