Course Goals: We will examine how Yiddish poets across different periods and styles represented Arabs and Muslims, considering the historical and ideological contexts in which their poems were written. The course will also pay close attention to poetic aesthetics, examining metaphorical language, questions of form, and the introduction of Arabic loan words within Yiddish verse. This five-session cycle continues the previous mini-course, "'Our Uncle Ishmael': Arabs and Muslims through Yiddish Eyes," focusing on Yiddish poetry. Students are welcome to participate regardless of their attendance in the previous course.
Course Tools: The course materials draw from the instructor's current three-year research project at the Martin Luther University in Halle/Wittenberg.
Additional Information: This course is conducted entirely in Yiddish.
