Course Goals: It happens that people who speak and understand Yiddish quite well can find great difficulty when they encounter words and expressions stemming from loshn-koydesh in Yiddish literature. This course is meant to help them. It is not aimed at those who know Hebrew. Participants will be introduced to the Hebrew roots and to the word families that are created around them as well as to the letters that serve as articles or prepositions. We will see the connection between the structure of a loshn-koydesh word and the category of word to which it belongs as well as several other aspects. The goal is to make it easier to correctly pronounce these words and to recognize their meaning. We also enjoy some sayings and other folkloric and literary materials where loshn-koydesh plays a central role.
