Wednesday, 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET: Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26, Dec. 3, 10, 17, Jan. 7
Course Goals: Eliezer Shteynbarg (1880–1932) is one of the most wonderful writers in Yiddish. In contrast to most of the fable writers in world and Jewish literature, he takes very little from other writers. He is original, sharp, full of Jewish knowledge, and awake to all the world phenomena of his time. He was beloved by the masses, yet his texts are not so simple: they are rich in allusions, with clever wordplay and free associations that demand an interpretation.
At the Workers Circle, we've already devoted two courses to Shteynbarg's fables: in 2015 and in 2020. Each time, we covered different texts. In 2025, too, we will take fresh work from his rich creative output that we haven't learned previously.
Additional Info: This course is taught entirely in Yiddish.
