Learning Yiddish connects you to 1,000 years of Ashkenazi Jewish civilization, literature, culture, and music. It makes it possible to express yourself in the same way that generations of Jews have for centuries. It is also rewarding, fun, and achievable! In this class, Workers Circle Yiddish Cultural Activism Fellow Yasha Giner will help you to take your first steps in learning mame-loshn. Using the classic textbook College Yiddish (download here), we will learn to speak, read, and write in Yiddish. Additional short, simple texts with a special focus on the Jewish Labor Bund will accompany our standard lessons. ​Yidish iz nisht ummeglekh! Yiddish is not impossible!

Course Goals: Basic grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension.

Course Tools: College Yiddish: An Introduction to the Yiddish Language and to Jewish Life and Culture by Uriel Weinreich, supplementary resources, and simple readings and songs provided by teacher.

Additional Info: Familiarity with the alef-beys (the Yiddish alphabet) not required.
