Thursday, 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET: Oct. 16, 23, 30, Nov. 6, 13, 20, Dec. 4, 11, 18, Jan. 8
Course Goals: This course marks the transition from beginner to intermediate level and is designed to help students consolidate their foundational Yiddish skills while beginning to engage more confidently with spoken and written Yiddish. Emphasis will be placed on communication, reading fluency, and grammatical awareness.
Course Tools: We’ll work through Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature, and Culture (Volume I) by Sheva Zucker (available for purchase here) using a structured approach to explore the most essential and practical elements of each chapter. The course will emphasize group practice of dialogs, alongside in-depth reading of selected texts and songs from the book, complemented by additional materials provided by the instructor. We'll start at the very beginning of the book and work selectively through the early chapters with greater emphasis on the middle and later sections of the book.
Additional Info: This course is designed for students who have completed three or more semesters of Yiddish at the beginner level, worked through other textbooks such as Colloquial Yiddish by Lily Kahn or In Eynem by Asya V. Schulman et al., and are eager to acquire a solid foundation for communicating in Yiddish. Prior knowledge of the alef-beys (the Yiddish alphabet)is required.
