Tuesday, 12:00 – 1:30 PM ET: Oct. 21, 28, Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25, Dec. 2, 9, 23, 30
Course Goals: The humorist Moshe Nadir (pen name of Yitskhok Rayz, 1885–1943) was for much of his career associated with the linke (i.e., the Communists), like many of the best Yiddish writers of the day. Nadir was known for his biting satire about American Jewish life, capitalism, race, and religion. He repented for his sins near the end of his life, after the Hitler-Stalin Pact in 1939, but we readers can enjoy the products of his anti-establishment heresy.
Course Tools: This course will examine a selection of Nadir's best poems and prose, mainly from the volume Nadirgang (1937). Since he wrote mainly for American readers, Nadir's language is relatively simple.
Additional Info: This course is taught entirely in Yiddish, though students are free to ask for English explanations.
