Monday, 12:00 – 1:30 PM ET: Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1, 8, 15, Jan. 5
Course Goals: Through the words of 26 Yiddish writers — from Esther Kreitman to Morris Winchevsky — East End Jews offers an unparalleled view into the life, labour, politics, and joys of London’s Jewish East End, from its heyday in the 1890s until the 1950s. We will read and discuss the original Yiddish stories featured in this book, journeying through the ideas and social changes that impacted the community and exploring how they speak to us today.
Course Tools: East End Jews by Vivi Lachs and Barry Smerin for English translations (available for purchase here and elsewhere), with original Yiddish stories provided by the instructor.
Additional Info: This class will be conducted in Yiddish, and students must be able to read the alef-beys (the Yiddish alphabet). Purchasing the book is recommended but not required.
