We will read and discuss poems by three outstanding women writers who have all written about the Jewish shtetl, albeit with quite different approaches: Miryam Ulinover (1890–1944), Anna Margolin (1887–1952), and Reyzl Zychlinski (1910–2001). What does the shtetl mean to them? Are there common elements in their representations? How is this different from the shtetl stereotype in the collective imagination today?

Course Goals: Get to know some Yiddish women writers by examining their works and lives. Improve comprehension skills of written texts, understand the historical context, develop vocabulary, and learn how to use different research tools in order to acquire independence in studying Yiddish literature.

Course Tools: Texts provided by the instructor.

Additional Info: This course is taught entirely in Yiddish, however difficult words/expressions/issues may be explained in other languages if necessary.
