Advanced with Sebastian Schulman: Yiddish in Quebec, Quebec in YIddish: Monday, 6:30 – 8:00 PM ET: June 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28

from $150.00

Monday, 6:30 – 8:00 PM ET: June 30, July 7, 14, 21, 28

Montréal and its environs have long been an important point on the map of global Yiddish culture. In this course, we'll take a deep dive into the history, literature, music, theatre, and culture of this unique centre of Yiddish creativity. Among other themes, we'll reexamine the relationship between the region's Jews and their francophone Québécois neighbours — a history often depicted as one of distrust and antisemitism — and explore how these speakers of joual and zhargon have far more in common than might be expected. Texts will include works by Chava Rosenfarb, J.I. Segal, Rokhl Korn, and other writers, as well as from local historians and contemporary musical artists.

Additional Info: Readings and other materials provided by the instructor. This course is taught entirely in Yiddish.
