This course explores the portrayal of Arabs and Muslims in Yiddish language and literature from early modern times through the 19th and 20th centuries. Students will analyze diverse prose and poetry while examining folk expressions, historical terms, and the complex interplay of cultural perspectives used by Yiddish writers in different times and places. The course materials draw from the instructor's current three-year research project at the Martin Luther University in Halle/Wittenberg.
