Most libhobers fun dem yidishn vort have heard of the Bundist leader Vladimir Medem. His wife, Gina, however, is far less well-known, despite the fact that she was something of a leftist celebrity in her own right. In this summer course, we will read Gina's writings from the early 1930s, by which time she had become a prominent Communist spokesperson and journalist with the Morgn Frayhayt. We will travel with Gina to Japan, the USSR, and Birobidzhan and accompany her on a speaking tour of America in the throes of the Great Depression.
Taught by Annie Cohen, a researcher of the Communist movement who is working on a translation of Medem's memoirs, this class will provide background context to the events under discussion using materials from the Yiddish press and archival sources. The class will be taught mostly in Yiddish, but slowly, with explanations and switching to English when needed. This is a continuation of a previous class, but no prior knowledge is required — the course will begin with a short introduction to Gina's biography and to the movement she was part of.
