Intermediate with Leyzer Burko: Isaac Bashevis Singer: Stories from the "Other Side": Tuesday, 12:00 – 1:30 PM: July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Tuesday, 12:00 – 1:30 PM: July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Course Goals: Explore Isaac Bashevis Singer’s short stories about demons and the supernatural. During and after World War II, Singer wrote some of his most powerful stories about the battle between Good and Evil — from the perspective of the "other side" (sitre akhre). These stories are rich with religious irony and rooted in the Hasidic folklore of Singer’s youth. They will serve as our guide to Jewish demonology, which has its own fascinating and complex vocabulary. Grammar topics will be discussed as they arise in the texts.
Course Tools: We will read simplified versions of Singer’s stories and analyze his spoken dialect — especially in “Shiddah and Kuziba,” for which we have a recording of Singer himself. All materials will be provided by the instructor.
Additional Info: This course is conducted in Yiddish with some grammar explanations in English.
