Remembering the Holocaust

Join us for a discussion of the new bilingual Yiddish-English translation of Hersh Smolar's Yidn on gele latesJews Without Yellow Stars. Our panel includes Dr. Gennady Estraikh, together with the book's translator Ruth Murphy and editor Catherine Madsen.

After the panel discussion, excerpts from four of Smolar's stories will be read in Yiddish, while the English translation is displayed on screen.

The book is a collection of actual and semi-fictional short stories centered around the Minsk ghetto and the surrounding Naliboki forest. It describes Jews trying to escape the ghetto and those who did escape and were able to join up with Soviet partisan groups. The appendix has testimony of Smoliar's brother, Nosn, who perished in the Warsaw ghetto, and whose testimony is part of the Ringelblum archives.
