Freedom Vigils: About
Join us each week outside Alligator Alcatraz and at other detention centers and sites to stand in peaceful solidarity with immigrants and demand an end to the cruel and authoritarian tactics being used against our communities. Together, we’ll lift up stories, music, and prayer as we call for an end to the inhumane detention of our neighbors and for the constitutional rights and protections due to all people.
In July of 2025, the Workers Circle reached out to leaders of faith and conscience in Florida to organize vigils outside the notorious Alligator Alcatraz detention center. Early reports from people detained in Alligator Alcatraz, their families and lawyers as well as news stories have documented
lack of constitutional right to due process impeding detainees from meeting confidentially with lawyers and legally challenging their detentions.
The disappearance of hundreds of people from Alligator Alcatraz.
Vigils began on August 3 across from the entrance on Rt. 41 and have continued weekly. In September Florida leaders began vigils in Tallahassee, Sarasota, and Orlando. Other communities of faith and conscience have since reached out to connect as they plan vigils or hold them, including Indiana leaders holding vigils outside Speedway Slammer.
