The Workers Circle responds to the US Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan which ruled that Alabama violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Ann Toback CEO said,

The US Supreme Court’s decision in Allen v. Milligan is an historic victory for Black voters in Alabama, for our nation, and for democracy. Alabama is now required to redraw its Congressional map fairly so that the power of Black voters is not diluted. The ruling underscored the effectiveness of key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which have been under relentless attack for more than a decade. Importantly, the decision utterly rejected the deceptive “race-neutral” approach to litigation that has been the hallmark of efforts and policies to disenfranchise voters of color and reaffirmed that race can be considered when drawing Congressional districts.

The Workers Circle salutes the plaintiffs, their attorneys, and the Alabama grassroots groups without whose advocacy and commitment to justice and equality, we would not have seen this victory. We will continue to call upon Congress to restore and strengthen the Voting Rights Act and to pass the Freedom to Vote Act to prevent discrimination in voting and to advance the multiracial democracy we need.
