In response to another fatal shooting by Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis of an ICU nurse Alex Pretti, Ann Toback, CEO of the Workers Circle released this statement.
Today, another person was murdered by ICE in Minneapolis; he was tackled by ICE thugs and shot dead while he lay on the ground. This comes on the heels of an ICE officer shooting Renee Nicole Good at point blank range and killing her. No one is safe. Not immigrants, not refugees, not citizens. They are taking elderly people. They are taking 2 and 5 year old children.
The terror that immigrants targeted by ICE are experiencing now, is terror well known to Jewish people. In 1942, Nazi officials knocked on my great uncle’s door in Antwerp, Belgium, and took him away for the crime of being Jewish. He never returned.
Today, we are seeing history repeating itself, as masked federal agents are breaking down doors in Minneapolis and across America and dragging off people who have contributed to our communities for decades. We see it as ICE agents violently attack and even murder American citizens who are exercising their constitutional rights and attempting to keep their neighbors safe.
What is happening in Minnesota will not stay in Minnesota. This violence terror is spreading across our country—California, Maine, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania. If we don't stop this here and now, it will engulf our nation. This violence must end.
I was in Minneapolis this past week and speak today in defiance of these violent, lethal operations and in defiance of the fear and hatred the Trump administration is fostering. I saw the brutality being inflicted on peaceful people. I spoke with people who were attacked, teargassed, and even imprisoned by ICE agents without any cause.
Every single one of us has a responsibility for ending ICE’s lawless reign of terror.
We call on Congress to stop funding the Department of Homeland Security and its ICE operations.
We call for an end to the ICE siege of Minneapolis and for ICE Out of our communities across the nation where they are terrorizing our friends, family, and neighbors.
We call for an end to ICE violence in the more than 200 detention centers across our nation that are holding people in violation of due process and international law.
We the people, will be the bulwark of our democracy. And together, neighbor with neighbor, we will turn the tide for freedom and democracy.
Stand with us in calling on lawmakers to oppose funding for ICE and Border Patrol and demand accountability and restraint in the Department of Homeland Security’s enforcement operations.
