In addition to studies, the Rabiner Seminar in Zhitomir introduced its students to modern pleasures, especially going to the theatre.  This laid the foundation of a new genre in modern Jewish life.

There, Goldfaden encountered the Broder Singers and thus began this new chapter.

We will analyze this beginning, the training of actors and singers, especially the role of women, in a culture where men were forbidden by commandment to hear women sing.

We will consider actresses Pippi Litman, Isa Kremer, Lola Folman, Ester-Rukhl and Ida Kaminska, Molly Picon.
