Although Serdatsky received the stamp of approval of Peretz, the literary editor of Der Veg in which she published her first story in 1905, she later bore a grudge against him. In A Zifts, clearly modeled on Dray Matones, published in her Geklibene shriftn, 1913 Serdatsky takes Peretz, and perhaps the entire male literary establishment, to account for their shallowness, smugness and failure to live up to their supposed ideals. We will see how Der Zifts ironically echoes Peretz’s iconic story.
