SAY NO to ICE tactics of violence, cruelty and dehumanization of immigrants who will be held at the Winton Processing Center in Hertford County, NC.
Join us on August 21 as we amplify the message that these mass detentions are immoral, inhumane, and un-American. With one person dying daily in ICE detention, let's raise our voices to stop all cruel ICE actions in our state!
Please park in the back rows of the parking lot at the courthouse (next to the field). We will also have a shuttle available for overflow satellite parking. We will have parking marshalls to direct traffic.
The Winton ICE Processing Center, formerly known as the Rivers Correctional Institute and owned by the GEO Group, was shut down in 2021 because of inhumane treatment. The conditions and operation of ICE detention centers owned by the GEO Group routinely violate standards of human dignity. Our immigrant friends, neighbors, and family are being swept up illegally and held without due process or access to legal support. People who have been detained are subject to unsanitary conditions, inadequate/inedible food, violence, mistreatment, and withholding of medical care. Most of the people detained in ICE centers have NO criminal record.
Freedom Vigils are peaceful, community actions held outside immigrant detention centers, courthouses, jails, and other public places, to unite people of diverse viewpoints and backgrounds under the banner of Constitutional rights and human decency. A core principle behind all Freedom Vigils is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, are strictly prohibited at the event. Violence, threats or acts of aggression of any kind will not be tolerated.
